Scottish Water lime slurry project for Spirotech

Spirotech Group has further built up its strong reputation for high quality design, build and installation competency within the water industry with a project at Invercannie Water Treatment Works in Scotland.

The purpose of the project was to install a new system to achieve a consistent milk of lime slurry at 5% w/w.

Lime slurry system technical specs

The plant consists of two 36 tonne storage silos mounted on loadcells. Each silo is fitted with a reverse jet cleaned filter unit for venting the conveying air during filling, high level probe, pressure relief valve, pressure transmitter and pneumatically operated butterfly valve at the silo inlet pipe. A Rotoflo discharger is fitted to each silo to provide a controlled discharge rate.

A series of screw conveyors are used to transfer the hydrated lime from the silos to the mix tanks below. A precision metering feeder is fitted above each mix tank to accurately measure the quantity of lime addition required per batch. There are two 6m3 working capacity mix tanks in total, both fitted with an agitator, and each silo system can be selected to feed either tank. The mix tanks discharge through a pumped transfer system supplied by others.

The system produces lime slurry from the mixing tanks with 5% calcium hydroxide content and the mixing tanks are cycled alternately on a duty/standby basis. Spirotech also supplied a duty/standby compressor package to provide compressed air to the filter units and pneumatically actuated equipment in our scope of supply.

Fresh drinking water for 300,000

This is a two year project for Invercannie Water Treatment Works that will see the complete refurbishment of the existing plant, with the capacity to produce up to 63 million litres of drinking water a day for the area. The treatment plant, which was originally built on the site in 1866 to supply water to the city of Aberdeen, draws water from the River Dee and serves around 300,000 customers across the North East.

Spirotech leads in water industry systems supply

Spirotech is a leader in lime make up systems for the water industry and the group has successfully designed, manufactured, and installed several very large projects for different water authorities across the UK. The system offered used only Spirotech’s in-house team of engineers and expertise.

All of the work is taking place within the existing site and carried out in accordance with the Scottish Government’s Covid-19 guidelines for construction and to meet all WIMES specifications, the standard requirement for any equipment supplied into the water industry.
