Spirotech upgrade operational biomass plants

Spirotech’s skilled engineers and installers are never thwarted by a challenge and the latest project to refit two operational UK biomass plants was simply taken in their stride as the power plants went offline to enable the team to complete vital upgrades.

The biomass plants where the upgrades were carried out, in Boston and Hull, are operated by Industrial Power Marine, themselves an engineering company based in South Wales and East Midlands. Spirotech, having previously worked on other biomass plants, was the obvious choice for the upgrade work which was primarily a conversion change to alternative fuel, from wood chip to RDF (Refuse Derived Fuel).

Spirotech’s expertise

Industrial Power Marine called upon Spirotech’s expertise to fabricate and install large robust conveyors to rework the lower feed hopper. The scope of the work included new twin screw feeders of carbon steel, new extension pieces and a new stainless steel 310 injector screw to directly inject product into the hoppers.

Extra challenges to an already tight deadline

Stripping out the existing equipment, making modifications and fitting new equipment were tasks enough with the power station offline but, in addition to the team working 7 days a week to ensure that shut down was as limited as possible, several other challenging factors were also in play. The required specialist wear-resistant chrome coatings involved more processes than usual which meant that the fabrication had to be manufactured much earlier to allow enough time for the coatings to be executed.

The project was successfully completed within the 6 week timescale.
