Further success for Spirotech’s water treatment expertise

Spirotech has recently completed the installation stage for a major north-eastern water company’s treatment facility. The contract was awarded to Spirotech as two very similar plants had previously been supplied to the same water authority eight years ago which have proved to be very reliable and efficient systems. Therefore, the Spirotech team of designers and engineers were under strict conditions to use the same equipment suppliers that had been used on those projects to ensure the system was identical in the way it operates and is maintained.

The brief

The project requirement was to design, manufacture, supply, deliver and mechanically install the equipment for a powder activated carbon system used to treat drinking water. The project design, manufacture and build included systems for storage, conveying and mixing. Powdered activated carbon (PAC) is used in the processing of drinking water at treatment facilities, primarily on a seasonal basis in order to deal with aesthetic problems with the water such as odour and taste issues associated with Geosmin and 2-MIB.

The detail

The plant consists of a 61m3 storage silo to store PAC which is suitable for bulk tanker filling and is fitted with a reverse jet cleaned filter unit for venting the conveying air.  The silo is mounted on loadcells for continuous contents indication along with a locally mounted Silo Fill Panel, provided by Spirotech, which contains the controls and indications required for the delivery driver to fill the silo.

Certain grades of PAC are classified as being capable of forming explosive atmospheres due to the presence of combustible dust in cloud form and the silo is therefore equipped with explosion protection in the form of explosion venting and ATEX certified equipment.

The silo is fitted with a single outlet fitted with an aeration system and discharging by means of an inclined screw conveyor which feeds material to a volumetric metering feeder, which in turn provides a continuous metered feed of PAC to process, under closed loop volumetric control in response to a demand signal determined by the plant control system. PAC is then discharged from the metering feeder into an eductor system for entrainment with carrier water and transfer to the final dosing points.

The plant has been successfully installed and is awaiting commissioning so that the plant can go live!
