Despite being a worldwide supplier of bulk handling systems, Spirotech Group is a company that likes to keep close ties with the local community and one of its recent activities has been to sponsor a local Netball team, `Sawtry Kites’
Sawtry Kites Captain, Rachel Hollocks, tells us the story of the team’s journey:
“In June 2019 the first session began with the ethos of making netball accessible to all ages and abilities; and that’s still what we do! A year on with a steady cohort of 18 players the team entered the Peterborough Play Netball league. For some it was the first “proper match” since secondary school and for others it had been at least 5yrs. With every game the team learnt new skills and developed existing ones, eventually going on to come 2nd in the league and the next season going on to take the top spot! Fast forward post covid and the team joined a “back to netball” fenland league alongside others in a similar position and level of skill set. Run by the England Netball county development officer this was a great opportunity to learn more match skills and further grow as a unit.
The league has developed and over the last 3 years the club now actively takes part in both the fenland summer and winter leagues, playing regular matches on a weekly basis with some well-established local clubs. With a solid 15 strong squad (with ages ranging from 14 to 55) the Sawtry Kites are now a well-established unit, and over the last few league campaigns have consistently finished top 3 in the division with some great victories under the belt and the last tournament finishing 4th overall in a field of 14!
