Cllr Palmer, accompanied by Sawtry Cllr Simon Bywater, was given a tour of Spirotech’s 40,000 sq ft design and fabrication departments by Production Director Russell Gadsby. Spirotech design and produce bulk material handling and pressure equipment for both UK and worldwide export and James and Simon were guided through the various stages of production.

Opportunity for face-to-face discussion

Russell Gadsby commented, “This has been a marvellous opportunity for us to discuss issues that face many businesses in the area – from road and rail infrastructure and communication to running an engineering business close to residential areas. We also talked about how the Conservative introduced ‘funding for export’ scheme has really helped Spirotech grow by taking the pressure off financing. UK Export Finance has enabled us to move on to a different level of project size and enhanced our reputation as suppliers of robust engineering for extremely demanding commercial environments. Both James and Simon are very keen to learn what is helping and what is hindering our local economy and I’m very glad we’ve had the time to talk directly with each other.”

Overall strategic vision will help growth within the county

The mayoral election is coming up and James, who is concerned that areas outside the immediate vicinity of Cambridge can at times feel forgotten, is keen to learn more about the businesses and facilities that fall within the newly combined mayoral authority. Whilst acknowledging that the county is already a very successful area, the mayor’s role will be to help and encourage businesses to operate and grow by creating an improved environment which will allow for easier employment access, along with an overall strategic vision that works with companies to help to achieve these goals.
