Spirotech Group has just completed one of its largest and most technically challenging projects in the UK, for a major paint production company.
The project, located in Sheffield, consists of five Carbon steel silos (two 150m3 Capacity and three 100m3 Capacity), and a lean phase pneumatic transfer system to transfer product to two 17.5m3 weigh hoppers at a maximum rate of 12TPH. The project was delivered as a turnkey system which included the design, project management, manufacture, mechanical and electrical installation, commissioning and a new independent electrical control system.
The five silos were each designed to store a different product to allow production of a finished base product. The powders stored are Titanium Dioxide; Two Grades of Calcium Carbonate; China clay and Kaolin clay.




















Skilled team of designers, engineers and installers
The Spirotech team of engineers designed and built all manufactured components, and in addition worked with key suppliers to source market leading ancillary equipment, and used trusted suppliers for the electrical installation and control system. The mechanical installation was carried out by the highly skilled in house team of installation engineers.
The system is designed to produce multiple variations of batch recipes which are discharged from the silos using the proven technology of the Severfield Rotoflo Dischargers and then pneumatically conveyed into either of the two receiving hoppers to accurately achieve the batch target weight for a particular recipe. Due to the varying product characteristics and bulk densities, the rotoflo dischargers and pressure transmitter on the pneumatic conveying system are linked to a PID loop to optimize the maximum throughput of the conveying system to ensure high production demand is achieved regardless of the batch recipe.

“This project was very challenging not only due to the physical size of the plant and the pressure this put on our design team and manufacturing facility, but also the technical aspects of the process as the powders being handled are notoriously difficult to design a plant around due to them being very fine and cohesive, making them very difficult to efficiently discharge from a silo, and also very problematic to pneumatically convey. Especially titanium dioxide!! We are delighted that the Spirotech team was able to provide the right solution, on budget and to timescale.
