As just one of a handful of companies worldwide who have the resources and skills to manufacture pressurised screw conveyors under licence, Spirotech added another notch to its growing worldwide reputation in the successful design, build and delivery to one of India’s major petrochemical plants, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd.
Set up in 1998 by its parent company, Panipat Refinery is a petrochemical plant located in Baholi and is the seventh refinery belonging to the Indian Oil Corporation, an Indian Government owned company. It is one of South East Asia’s largest integrated petrochemicals plants.
Graded steel makes finer flow
The project (EPCM Services for PX and PTA expansion at Panipat facility) was commissioned in April this year and was driven by the tight deadline to supply seven pressurised screw conveyors to India by the end of September.
The Indian petrochemical facility at Panipat required the screw conveyors for movement of crude terephthalic acid cake, normally transported between rotary driers to feed stacks, and carried out as part of a planned expansion of the facility. Terephthalic acid (PTA) is a useful raw material for producing other commercial polymers and Spirotech designed and manufactured three conveyors in 304 grade stainless steel and four conveyors in 316 grade stainless steel.
Spirotech’s design engineers worked closely with Indian Oil to ensure all technical requirements were met, drawing on data and knowledge gathered from over 30 years’ experience working on PTA projects.
Overcoming issues for a first rate result
Although working to tight deadlines are all in the daily run at Spirotech the pressure was exacerbated by the problems that many manufacturing companies have been facing recently – the war in Ukraine causing supply chain issues and the pandemic causing some staff shortages.
Fortunately the situation has now eased, the issues were overcome and the screw conveyors reached Panipat in time ready for installation. Spirotech’s commissioning engineers will travel to India in the coming weeks to oversee the installation, commissioning and handover stage of the project.
