Spirotech has a strong reputation for high quality design and manufacturing in the bulk handling industry and this was recognised last year when a major oil and gas company placed a £5.5m order for pressurised screw conveyors.
To be delivered over 12 months for use in the customer’s oil processing plants. The successful tender was awarded to Spirotech by the client, based in the Middle East, on both technical and commercial merit in the bulk handling industry.
Contending with arduous conditions
The project consisted of 32 large conveyors that were required to operate under arduous conditions with both high temperatures and high pressures to consider. The completed system encompasses conveyors working on the critical path 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 52 weeks per year, across all aspects of the chemical process.
An extremely high technical specification was achieved utilising in-house design, engineering and fabrication skills at Spirotech’s 40,000 square feet UK manufacturing base. Each conveyor was built to PD5500 CAT II with full third party inspection. Spirotech handled everything associated with the material conveying including site acceptance tests which were carried out on each unit – the technical documentation alone weighed 945 kgs.
Government funding ensures no delays
The client was impressed with Spirotech’s technical expertise but before awarding the contract the client also had to be sure they were satisfied with Spirotech’s ability to deliver. The gap between funding manufacturing costs and receiving payment for the finished products would put significant pressure on working capital and in this respect Spirotech worked closely with the UK Government, via NatWest, to secure funding for the project which would ensure that there were no delays. NatWest’s detailed knowledge of the UK Government scheme helped Spirotech to successfully apply for the Export Credit Guarantee Department’s Export Working Capital Scheme. UK Export Finance also facilitated Spirotech’s working capital to ensure that critical delivery dates were met.
Spirotech-SRD MD David Gadsby explains how working closely with the UK Government helped to secure funding.
New enquiries from the West
Spirotech has been successfully trading in the Middle & Far East for many years and the steps taken to fund this size of project have been both a useful exercise and extremely beneficial, as Spirotech now have all of the necessary knowledge and contacts in place to handle much larger projects. Spirotech’s MD David Gadsby commented, “We are delighted that we have been able to forge such a good relationship with NatWest’s Relationship Manager, Mike Cartwright, and know that we can rely on its support to provide working capital to fund major new orders in the future. We are now receiving solid enquiries from the US and Canada – these are very exciting times for the Spirotech Group”.
