Spirotech hold apprenticeships in high regard as a means of training a new generation of engineers with on-the-job training and accompanying study.
The latest candidates to take up the 3-year apprenticeships are Felix Grange and Harry Manning at Spirotech Group in Cambridgeshire, and Liam Morgan at Spirotech York.
Felix and Harry are currently working 5 days a week at Spirotech, starting out in the fitting section, and for one year from the beginning of October both will spend 2 days each week studying Level 2 Welding at Peterborough Regional College and 3 days at Spirotech. During the second year the college training reduces to one day per week.
Liam has also started working at the Spirotech York office and will be attending York College for the next 2 years to study design and mechanical engineering to NVQ level 3.
Gaining valuable hands-on experience
Spirotech have designated mentors for each of the apprentices to instruct and check each task and offer valuable advice. The apprentices report that they thoroughly enjoy being at Spirotech as being on the factory floor is very different to being in college. The projects are bigger, more intricate, their time is spent hands-on and they are learning so much by being in the busy environment and watching how the experienced engineers are working.
