Spirotech has recently completed another lime plant upgrade for the Water Industry due to the existing lime plant being in the region of 35 years old and plagued with reliability issues.
In this instance, Spirotech’s experienced in-house design and project management team deployed an efficient solution to make substantial savings for their client by refurbishing the plant, as opposed to replacing the entire system.
The lime plant upgrade project consisted of two existing storage silos being refurbished with new ancillary equipment for safe filling of the silos by pneumatic tanker. Each silo cone was cut back and fitted with the clients nominated silo discharger to assist with reliable discharge and provide a controlled discharge rate from the silo. In addition, each outlet on the silo dischargers were fitted with an actuated valve and a screw conveyor to transfer hydrated lime to the mixing tanks, via a loss in weight metering feeder for accurate lime addition into the mix tanks.
There are two Mix tanks in total, each silo system can be selected to feed either tank and each mixing tank is fitted with an agitator. The mix tanks discharge through a pumped transfer system which produces lime slurry from the mixing tanks with 1–6% calcium hydroxide content. The mixing tanks are cycled alternately on a duty/standby basis.

Excluding the silo discharger and pumped transfer all equipment was manufactured in Spirotech’s works at Sawtry, Cambridgeshire and installed by Spirotech’s in-house installation team.
